Choose the beach that fits your day
You don’t need to hit every beach on your first afternoon. Your hotel location, what you want to do afterward, and how much moving around you feel like doing should shape the choice.

Where I’d begin
If you ask me where to start, I’m pointing you toward Ipanema. Make it a simple day: beach, something to eat, then a walk through the neighborhood.
You’ll get more out of that than rushing between three beaches just to say you saw them. If you’re still choosing your base, read my guide to where to stay in Rio.
Equally worth your time
I put Leblon alongside Ipanema in my recommendations. Don’t treat it as somewhere you only visit after you’ve “done” Ipanema.
You can build your beach day around Leblon from the start, particularly if that’s where you’re staying or where you want to spend the afternoon. Choose the beach that fits your day.
Give this end of the beach a look
People often say “Copacabana” as though the whole stretch is one interchangeable place. Your exact location matters.
Leme is worth a look if you’re staying nearby. My preference for a first-time base remains Ipanema or Leblon, but that doesn’t mean you need to leave Leme every morning.
Keep your first beach day simple
Bring less
Carry what you need for the afternoon, rather than your whole travel setup.
Ask the price first
Before accepting chairs, umbrellas, food or drinks, ask what it costs and what’s included.
Watch your belongings
Plan how you’ll keep them attended before heading into the water.
Check swimming conditions
Follow posted warnings and lifeguard instructions. A beautiful beach doesn’t guarantee safe swimming that day.
Leave room for lunch

The neighborhood is part of the experience. You don’t have to spend every hour on the beach.
Get something to eat nearby, take your time, and let the afternoon breathe. Rio gets better when you stop trying to squeeze the whole city into one day.
