Where to Eat in Rio: Four Places I’ve Actually Tried

A more upscale Ipanema dinner, two very different beach meals, and a proper rodízio night. These are four Rio places I have actually tried.

My short answer

For a more upscale seafood dinner, Satyricon is my pick. Pato Praia is a relaxed meal together by Leblon Beach. Dumare fits a sunny Copacabana afternoon. If dinner itself is the event, give Palace’s rodízio the evening it deserves.

Four meals, four reasons to go

These are four places I have actually visited, not a ranking of every restaurant in Rio. Satyricon is the standout for me. Pato and Dumare fit more relaxed afternoons. Palace is the full rodízio night, and I have been there more than once. Pick the experience you want, not just the nearest pin on a map.

An Ipanema seafood dinner: Satyricon

When you want dinner to feel like an occasion

Satyricon is one of my favorite restaurants, period. It is the more upscale dinner in this group. I went there for seafood in Ipanema. The restaurant describes its cooking as seafood and Mediterranean, and its address is Rua Barão da Torre 192.

If you are staying in Ipanema and want one dinner that feels like an occasion, this is where I would start. It is a different kind of evening from eating between beach stops. Check the current menu and reservations before heading over.

A Leblon beach lunch: Pato Praia

When the beach is already the plan

Pato Praia is a good place to settle in for a relaxed meal for two by Leblon Beach. It is not the upscale night out that Satyricon is, and that is the point. I had food there with the beach in front of me. Come for the water, the company, and a slower afternoon.

Pato Praia lists its Leblon beach location at Posto 11 and has a separate beach menu. If you are already spending the afternoon there, the meal fits naturally into the day. Check the current beach menu before you go.

Seafood on the Copacabana beachfront: Dumare

When you are walking Avenida Atlântica

Dumare fits a sunny Copacabana day. I like the chill beach vibe there, especially when I am already on the waterfront. I stopped there for seafood during one of those afternoons.

Dumare is at Posto 3, on Avenida Atlântica opposite Rua Siqueira Campos. Go for a relaxed break during a Copa afternoon, not because you need to turn it into a formal dinner. Check the current menu before you go.

A night for Brazilian barbecue: Churrascaria Palace

When dinner is the event

I have been to Churrascaria Palace more than once. It is a rodízio, with meat brought around the table and a buffet, so the point is to settle in and enjoy the meal.

The restaurant is on Rua Rodolfo Dantas in Copacabana. Its current site says the rodízio and buffet come together, while drinks and dessert are separate. If you want a long Brazilian steakhouse dinner rather than a quick stop, make room for it in the evening. Check current booking details before you go.

How to choose without wasting your day

You do not need to eat in the neighborhood where you sleep for every meal. I usually point first-time visitors toward Ipanema or Leblon as a base. A specific Copacabana meal can still be worth the visit. Choose it because you want that experience, then plan the rest of the day around the area.

Ask yourself three things: Where will I already be? Do I want a quick beach break or a long dinner? Have I checked today’s menu and booking details? That will do more for your trip than a list of 50 places you will never reach.
